International Women’s Day (IWD) will be celebrated Today, and to mark the
annual event Arklow Town Team is hosting a Virtual 5km or 10km Fundraising Challenge for a
second year. The Challenge can be taken on by Anyone, Anywhere, at Anytime during the week of 8 th to 14 th
March 2021. Proceeds of the fundraiser will be divided between Bray Women’s Refuge and an
Arklow Town Team tourism project.Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, International Women’s Day in Arklow has been marked with a
fundraising lunch, however in 2021 a hugely successful virtual fundraiser took place instead. This
March, IWD will be celebrated virtually again, but with the added advantage that people can meet
up to complete the challenge together, if they wish.
Miriam Murphy of Arklow Town Team says, “as numbers of domestic violence cases have been
reported increased over the past 2 years, with the pandemic, lack of fundraising events for
organisations, the Arklow Town Team International Women’s Day event would like to support this
very worthy charity. The work of the Women’s Refuge needs our support”.
Participants can Walk, Jog or Run their chosen distance and will receive a beautiful custom medal
which will be posted out afterwards. Sign up at wwww.popupraces.ie or find a link on the Arklow
Town Team Facebook Page. Participants will also be entered into a draw for several fantastic prizes.
Arklow Town Team is made up of volunteers from community, business and the local authority.
A portion of the proceeds of this fundraiser will also go to a Tourism Project. Allison Ryder of Arklow
Town Team explains; “last year we had participants from all around Ireland take part and we’re
encouraging people in Arklow to encourage friends and family to join in again this time. With the
funds we raised last year, the Town Team was able to develop and launch a new Tourism Brand for
Arklow, with dedicated VisitArklow.ie website and social media channels which have begun to help
lay the foundation to promote Arklow as a wonderful place to visit.
