Wicklow Sinn Féin TD John Brady has strongly criticised Uisce Éireann for its ongoing failure to resolve the persistent foul odours emanating from the Murrough Wastewater Treatment Plant in Wicklow Town.
Brady has been raising this issue with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since 2019, and most recently contacted Uisce Éireann again in September 2024.
While the company acknowledged the problem and committed to a full site survey in the first quarter of 2025, Brady insists more immediate action is needed.
Brady stated:
“In 2019, I lodged a complaint with the EPA about the offensive odours after visiting the site with local residents. Measures were taken at the time, but clearly, they were insufficient, as the issue persists.
Following my latest representations in September, Uisce Éireann informed me that investigations are ongoing, and a full site survey would begin in this quarter of 2025. In the meantime, they have assured me that crews will regularly replace the carbon filters on their odour control units to mitigate the smell.
However, this is little comfort to residents, businesses, and visitors who continue to endure the appalling stench. It not only disrupts daily life but also harms the town’s reputation and its potential for tourism. This situation is entirely unacceptable and demands immediate and decisive action.
The community of Wicklow Town deserves better than to live with this ongoing nuisance. I will keep pressing for stronger measures to ensure this issue is resolved once and for all. The health, well-being, and quality of life of Wicklow residents must take priority. It’s time for Uisce Éireann to step up and deliver a lasting solution.”
