It was another busy weekend for the Wicklow RNLI, who responded to two incidents on Saturday and Sunday.
Both lifeboats set out on Saturday the 10th of August following a report of a vessel that had come into difficulty and was taking in water near the Silver Strand Beach. The Inshore lifeboat was the first to arrive on scene and began the search around the last reported position of the vessel.Good weather conditions made it easy for the lifeboat to locate the vessel, and contact was soon made with a motorboat with three passengers making its way back to Wicklow Harbour.
According to the passengers, the vessel had experienced mechanial issues earlier, but they had received assistance from another vessel passing by and were now in good stead to continue their way back to land.Once satisfied that the occupants of the vessel were okay and in no clear danger, both lifeboats were stood down by the coast guard.
At around 6.10pm on Sunday the 11th of August, the RNLB Bridie O’Shea slipped its moorings from the South Quay to respond to a coast guard request to assist a yacht with mechanical problems. An eight-metre yacht with two occupants was located at around 6.30pm just north of Six Mile Point.Conditions at the time were wind south westerly in direction force 2 with sea state slight.
An assessment of the vessel was carried out by Coxswain Tom McAulay, who found that the vessel had experienced mechanical problems and that the engine had to be shut down. Without the use of an engine, it was decided to establish a tow in order to bring the yacht safely back to Wicklow Harbour. The vessel was brought back to Wicklow Harbour by around 7.30pm and both passenger were brought safely ashore.
