The application, which will be lodged on Friday, details plans to transform the derelict building into a community and sports and recreation centre.
The main part of the project will be the construction of a basketball court at the back of the building, which may be used for other indoor sports such as Padel and Badminton.
Speaking today, the Tánaiste said:
“I am delighted to see progress finally being made with this project. The submission of the planning application marks a major step forward in bringing the Old Garda Station back to life, not just as a building, but as a meaningful space for the people of Ashford.
The plans as detailed in the application include the construction of an indoor basketball court at the back of the station, as well as a refurbishment of the main body of the station which dates back to 1840 and has been derelict since 2003.
The estimated cost of the renovation is €3 Million, and the planning application is being submitted by the Ashford Development Association.
The Tánaiste added:
“I would like to thank Noel Keyes and the Ashford Development Association for their efforts in getting this over the line, as well as Councillor Shane Langrell who has also been extremely vocal in his support for this project.
“While this is just the beginning of the process, I have no doubt that this project will deliver real and lasting benefits for the community. I look forward to watching it take shape and to seeing the positive impact it will have on the lives of people in Ashford.”
