Staffing Crisis Hits Wicklow Childcare Sector as 65% Report Vacancies

Figures published by Pobal, has highlighted the growing pressures faced by the childcare sector.

Early Childhood Ireland has warned that low pay and poor working conditions are driving qualified educators out of the workforce, with some leaving the profession entirely and others deciding to emigrate.

Frances Byrne, Director of Policy with Early Childhood Ireland, said without significant investment in Budget 2026, many services across Wicklow will continue to struggle to fill roles. She warned that the staffing crisis will have dire impacts on children’s education and development if it is not addressed.

"Early Years education and care isn’t about babysitting. It is the first step in a child’s educational journey before they transition to primary school. Our educators lay the foundation for lifelong learning, which is recognised by the government, so it is only fair that their pay and conditions reflect that," said Byrne.

"Budget 2026 is a chance for Ireland to start catching up with other countries and finally recognise Early Years as a vital part of the wider education system."

The organisation is calling on the Government to guarantee pay parity between Early Years graduates and primary school teachers, arguing that this would be a key step in tackling the recruitment and retention challenges facing the sector.

"Students across the country are set to start Early Years degrees this month, and we can only hope that they will graduate into a better system where their pay and conditions reflect their instrumental role in young children’s lives," said Byrne.
