Wicklow County Council’s Road Safety Together Committee has launched its new campaign for Christmas, the ‘Gift of a Lift’, to raise awareness about the importance of planning safe journeys home during the festive season. This initiative encourages people to commit to giving a family member or friend a lift home or to arrange a taxi for them during the festive season, using a specially designed Christmas card. As of December 5, 2024, there have been 165 fatalities on our roads nationally, five of which occurred in County Wicklow. This tragic figure translates to 165 empty seats at the table this Christmas Day.
Alcohol continues to be the most commonly detected intoxicant among drivers in Ireland, followed by cannabis, with detection rates for both substances continuing to rise.
