The refurbishment of Charlesland Athletics track is finally underway this summer after originally being awarded funding in 2020 from the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Funding grant.
The funding was later topped up in 2023 bringing the total allocation to €436,032.
Visiting the site recently Greystones Councillor Lourda Scott welcomed the investment.
“It’s great to see the work has finally started on the track in Charlesland. The upgrade was badly needed and the people who use the track regularly have been waiting for this to be completed for the last number of years. We are very lucky to have the only Athletics track in Co Wicklow on our doorstep.
Investments in Sports facilities like these are hugely important for the community. Especially, after the excitement of the Olympics, where our field and track athletes did so incredibly well, narrowly missing out of medals.
We will have so many young people inspired to start running by the likes of Rhasidat Adeleke and our very own five time Olympian Fionnula McCormack. I hope that once our brand new track is reopened, that we can capitalise on the Olympic spirit and I will be looking to maximise its use by the public, clubs and schools as much as possible."
Scott has been a long-time advocate for increasing sports facilities in the area, working with Newcastle FC to secure pitches and also getting an audit done on the leisure facilities needed for the area.
“I have also asked the Council to look at improvements to the upper field in Shoreline, behind the tennis courts. This has great potential to add to the area, but badly needs drainage and general maintenance.
I am delighted to say that following my representations funding has been set aside to do some improvement works.
I will be working with the Council to make sure that this and the completion of the track is completed quickly and that people have a place to train coming into the darker evenings.”
