Originally built in 1907, the building underwent extensive renovations that included repairing its original sash windows, doors, brickwork, and cast-iron gutters.
Special care was taken to restore the original features of this protected structure. Interior renovations included complete electrical rewiring, fireproofing, and new plumbing. Kitchens and accessible toilet facilities were installed to ensure full wheelchair accessibility on the ground floor.
The project was partially funded by the 2023 Community Recognition Fund, which was established by the Department of Rural and Community Development to acknowledge the significant efforts of communities in welcoming and supporting individuals coming to Ireland from Ukraine and other countries.
The funding aims to support the development of community infrastructure and facilities that benefit the wider community.
Cllr. Paul O’Brien, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, thanked all those in attendance, including Fr. Michael O’Kelly, parish members, councillors, and Wicklow County Council officials.
He acknowledged the hard work and vision of everyone involved in the project. “Your dedication and time have made this transformation possible to create a space to foster connection, promote inclusivity, and to serve the needs of the community for many years to come.”
