Under the proposals, motorists found doing more than 30 kilometres per hour over the speed limit will face seven penalty points, court prosecution and a fine of up to €2,000.
The laws would see a sliding scale of penalties, depending on the speed, as opposed to the current €80 fine and three penalty points.
