“I am delighted to see such a significant investment in the garden county of Ireland.
“Greenway projects and active travel schemes are of huge benefit to all communities in county Wicklow.
“These projects increase active travel and create safer, greener transportation options for all.
“On top of this these projects boost local tourism, reduce congestion, and promote healthier lifestyles, as well as enhance the county’s reputation as a hub for sustainable transport.”
In addition to the Greenway funding, Wicklow County Council will receive €250,000 in Local Authority Greenways Support.
This allocation is intended to provide engineering services and additional project resources, ensuring that these critical infrastructural developments are implemented effectively and on schedule.
“From the Blessington Lake Loop to the much-anticipated Arklow to Shillelagh route, these Greenways will not only create safer, more sustainable routes for walking and cycling but will also enhance local tourism, connect communities, and contribute to a greener and healthier future for Wicklow.
“These projects will connect Wicklow to national cycling and walking routes, making them a key part of Ireland's growing network of sustainable travel options.”
This funding is part of a broader €360 million investment in walking and cycling infrastructure for 2025, which includes €74.5 million allocated specifically for Greenways.
