Leinster Fleadh To Take Place In Wicklow Town.

There are over 10,000 visitors expected to descend on Wicklow Town next weekend to compete in and take part in the Leinster Fleadh.

There are over 10,000 visitors expected to descend on Wicklow Town next weekend to compete in and take part in the Leinster Fleadh.
The Wicklow Town Heritage Trail has been included as part of the programme for visitors to the town and plans have been put in place to ensure that visitors learn the rich history and heritage of Wicklow Town.

The walk will commence outside its usual location, The Failte Ireland Office in Fitzwilliam Square at 11am on Saturday 13 th July and will take approximately 2 hours to complete – enabling the participants to spend some time at each location. Visitors to the Fleadh and locals are all welcome to take part in what is a very informative walk, detailing the rich history of Wicklow Town from the landing of St.Patrick in 432 to the end of the Civil War in 1923.

The trail covers 18 key sites of Historical interest including the following:
 The story of local man Robert Halpin who laid the first Trans-Atlantic cable.
 The history of the Abbey Grounds and the Franciscan Abbey.
 The story of Billy Byrne and the 1798 rising in Wicklow Town.
 The massacre of over 300 mainly women and children in Melancholy Lane by
Sir Charles Coote in 1641.
 The story of the Black Castle including details of some of the battles that took
place over 6 centuries.
 The attempted landing by St. Patrick at Travilahawk Beach.
 The history relating to the Barrow Green, including stories of the secret burials
that took place there.

The Volunteer Heritage Trail guides look forward to welcoming visitors from the
Fleadh and locals to enjoy what should be a fantastic weekend in Wicklow Town.
