Gardai say one of the main targets of their road safety campaign this weekend will be motorists using phones while driving.
There's been a 24 per cent increase in the number of people found on the phone while driving with 80,000 penalty points notices being issued so far this year just for that offence alone.
Assistant Commissioner at the National Roads Policing Bureau, David Sheahan, says many of those caught weren’t just taking or receiving a call while driving.
He says a large number were found to be either texting or checking out their Facebook or online Websites.
