Additional proposals have also been made to deal with the supply of medicines to the North and other day to day issues for people there.

EU Commission vice-president, Maros Sefcovic, says the extension of the grace period until September 30th comes with conditions.

The Taoiseach's welcomed EU proposals which mean drivers from the North and Britain will no longer need an insurance green card to travel here.

Michael Martin says it demonstrates real-life solutions to real-life issues from the EU.

He describes it as a positive approach to the protocol.
