Wicklow TD, Jennifer Whitmore has reiterated her call for Wicklow County Council to intervene in the ongoing situation that has seen the playground in Ashford closed since October 2022.
Deputy Whitmore, who is also the Social Democrats spokesperson for Children, had previously called on the Council to purchase the land by way of a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO).
“It is now over two years since the community in Ashford were locked out of their playground and park. This was a wonderful amenity and a beautiful spot to visit that was enjoyed by people of all ages here. The abrupt circumstances in which the community were suddenly denied access to the park and playground were very upsetting for people here and it is unacceptable that two years on they are still locked out of this key community facility,” commented Ms Whitmore.
“I am reiterating my call on Wicklow County Council to intervene and CPO this site for the people of Ashford. Playgrounds and parks are such important amenities for our communities, not only for our children but also as an opportunity for parents and carers to get out and meet others. The community in Ashford put a lot of work, love and care into the playground here and steps need to be taken to ensure that they once again have access to it whilst also safeguarding its future as a treasured community amenity,” concluded Deputy Whitmore.
