Tánaiste, Minister for Defence, and Wicklow TD Simon Harris has praised the lifesaving work of Ireland’s Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS), which completed 21 missions in County Wicklow in 2024.
The EAS, often referred to as the Air Ambulance, plays a vital role in responding to critical incidents across the country.
These missions often involve severe trauma from falls, road traffic collisions, and other urgent medical emergencies.
The service provides rapid air transport for patients of all ages often to Dublin’s major trauma centres and specialist hospitals, including Beaumont, Tallaght, and CHI Crumlin.
With a total of 652 missions nationwide last year, the EAS continues to demonstrate its essential, all-island reach. The county-by-county breakdown highlights Wicklow’s share of these interventions, showcasing the service’s impact locally as well as nationally.
Tánaiste Simon Harris said:
“I want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the extraordinary team behind our air ambulance service. Their work makes a real difference to communities across the country, including here in Wicklow.
“These figures highlight the critical role the EAS plays in providing fast, expert medical care, particularly in remote or hard-to-reach areas.
“It’s a service that quite literally saves lives, ensuring that some of our most seriously ill or injured patients receive emergency care when every second counts.
“Operating 365 days a year, this service is a gamechanger for both rural and urban Ireland. The impact it has had and continues to have on families across the country cannot be overstated.
“As Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, I’m incredibly proud of this service and deeply committed to ensuring it remains properly funded, fully resourced, and supported into the future. It is nothing less than essential.”
