Sinn Féin To Reflect On Disappointing Election Result. - posted at 2:02pm

The party is set to win seats across the country, but will fall well short of expectations.

Mary Lou McDonald said she's disappointed with the party's result and it's time to reflect on it ahead of a potential general election this year.  With approaching 300 seats filled in the local elections her party has less than 12 per cent of the vote.  By contrast Fine Gael and Fianna Fail will likely lose seats in this election but are polling in the early 20s.

Sinn Féin is also under pressure in the European elections where tallies in Midlands North West show there's a risk the party will lose its seat in that constituency.  While Lynn Boylan will be involved in a fight in Dublin to win one for the party.

Sinn Féin's Housing Spokesman Eoin O'Broin said the party failed to get its voters out and will need to reflect on reasons why.

A quarter of local council seats across the country filled - posted at 12:46pm

European votes are also being counted though first results won't come until late tonight.

250 seats have now been filled on councils across the country with Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Independents taking the vast majority of seats so far.

Now it still looks like Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will lose seats when compared to 2019.  Sinn Féin could pick up 30 or 40 seats, but are polling well below what was expected of them

A roughly 11/12 per cent result so far also puts in question the party's ability to take a European seat in either Dublin or Midlands North West where its candidates will be scrapping for seats.

Attention has also starting turning to the general election with some in Fine Gael in particular now wanting to go to the polls again in the autumn.
